Photo Album(Excerpts..) Baguio's Forgotten Ibaloi HeritageMar 18, '08 3:32 AM
for everyone
The Baguio City Yearbook 2008 is now available in Baguio City. It hit the street last week, during the Holy Week, a peak tourist season.

We have been very busy finishing writing, editing and lay-outing it for the past weeks that is why we also have neglected our multiply site. We will blog more actively again from now on.

Here is the first spread of a piece I wrote for the Yearbook. Hope you support the Yearbook.

How do we get a copy?
jackcarino wrote on Mar 31
We still have to set up our distribution system for abroad. But if you like, we can just do bank to bank transaction. We'll check on the freight fees.

Wow ! She is a beauty, this speaks volume of words that "shy mango" is just a myth. Ibaloi women are competitive and achievers .Incidentally, I saw a hard copy of this photo in full length, still in good condition, among my late dad's old photo collection along with an old old fading photo of a certain " Fianza" in Itogon sitting infront of his house and his family . Fianza was wearing a G-string but fully clothed on top. I believe it was taken by an American photographer based on the writing on the reverse side of the photo. Thanks for sharing.

Is your late dad's photo collection within your reach? Maybe you can share those precious old photos so we can stir up some sense of pride for our ibaloi heritage.

I believe the photo collection is still at home in Tomay . The last time I came home was in August 2005 . Wish I can be home so I can share some of the photos you might be interested in. Anyhow, thanks for keeping the Ibaloi culture, heritage and spirit alive. Si Apo Shiyos eh onbendisyon son sikhatayon ehmin.

The first ever Baguio Carnival was held in 1915 at Burnham Park, on the same year the park was completed and opened to the public.

Thanks, I'll make the necessary correction. I have pics of Martina Salming (Baguio Carnival '23), Beatrice Sanup (MIss Baguio '27) and Julia Linney (Miss Mt. Province 1927).

Another possible souvenir book -- Miss Baguio through the years. Our next-door neighbor at P. Valenzuela St. was a title-holder sometime in the early 60s -- Linda Biscocho. And what about a retrospective on the social events which took place at the old quonset-style Baguio Auditorium beside the athletic bowl? How about it, Jack? Unless, of course, you've already written about this in another publication.

Ed, a feature on "Miss Baguio through the years" would be a hit for the centennial. Matrabaho lang talaga ang research for the story. Hopefully, Alex Maynardo Castro, who commented on this post below you and our acknowledged expert on vintage beauty queens, would be willing to contribute a write up and photos for this.

Alex, there is a popular demand for a feature article on "Miss Baguio through the years" which can be included in the centennial edition of The Baguio City Yearbook. Hope you can contribute what you have in terms of a write up with photos, kami nalang ang magpupuno ng gaps, kung ano kulang. O ano? It's a deal? This will be for Baguio!

Jack, there's a literature forum tomorrow, Friday, at UP Baguio, at 1 pm. You might want to bring some copies to sell. I already have my copy, binili ni Luchie for me at dinala sa akin dito sa Maynila. I intend to buy a couple more copies to send to relatives abroad.

By the way Alex, Martina Salming, the 1923 Baguio Carnival Queen, is a grand daughter of my great grandfather Mateo Cariño. Martina is the daughter of Sabina Cariño and Salming Pirazo.

Her escort at the carnival was the famous Bontoki doctor Hilary Clapp, who at that time was one of her many suitors. Later on, Martina married businessman Juan Carantes, a brother of Busa Carantes of Lukban, Baguio.

he was called Pitapit wasn't he? All those surnames are so familiar. There was also a Miss Baguio 1929, as chosen by Philippine Free Press, her name escapes me, but I have her picture as well. And what about Evangeline Castro, the 1st post-war Miss Philippines? She's settled in Venezuela after marryinga a certain Mr. Gassol.
